Keeping your washable menstrual pads and undies clean is quicker and easier than you'd think! And while opting for a reusable product may seem like a small gesture, it’s actually a huge leap toward a greener, waste-free planet!
We made this guide to show you how to wash and dry your menstrual undies in a flash!
Rinse the items under tap water, gently wringing out the blood.
You can also soak your underwear, pads, and carrying pouch in a sink or bucket full of cold water for 15 minutes, then stir them around and give them a gentle squeeze to get the blood out. Just be sure you don’t wring them out with too much oomph – you might tear the fabric!
Dump out the old water, hold them under the tap, and keep on with that gentle wringing until the water runs clear. You might need to rinse 2 or 3 times depending on how heavy your flow was that day.
When the water starts running clear, you’ve rinsed enough. You can then move on to the next step.
After soaking and rinsing, it's time to wash your period undies, removable pads, and carrier pouch.
You can do this either by hand or with a washing machine with warm water and gentle soap (preferably biodegradable).
Knowing how to wash your menstrual undies is a big plus because they'll last so much longer. So the extra effort is totally worth it!
Once you're done washing your stuff, it's time to move on to drying.
One little thing: In order to preserve the absorbent quality of the fabric, we don't recommend fully drying your period undies by machine.
Instead, we recommend drying them fully by laying them out flat or by hanging them from a clothesline.
If you have to, you can throw them in the machine for about 10 minutes just to make sure they're fully dry.
Rinse, wash, dry
More and more people who menstruate are ditching uncomfortable tampons and pads for period undies, but not many have learned how to care for them.
Thankfully, taking good care of them is a lot easier than you might think. Plus, this small gesture on your part is one more step toward a green and waste-free planet.
It's pretty clear that washable period undies are therefore an environmentally friendly and economical solution, both over the short and the long term. You can reduce your environmental footprint by almost completely eliminating single-use sanitary products.
All of which is to say that knowing how to wash and look after yours is a great way of making sure they last their longest.
